Cavity Prevention

Clearwater FL Family DentistryYou only get one set of permanent teeth during your lifetime, so protecting them throughout your life is extremely important. Good oral hygiene can help all people avoid the development of cavities and tooth decay, and simple daily habits in cavity prevention can have tremendous benefits in protecting the teeth over a lifetime.

Brush and Floss Daily. The two most important things that you can do to protect your teeth day in and day out are brushing and flossing. Brushing the teeth twice a day and flossing once a day help to remove damaging plaque that builds up along the base of the teeth and gum line. Plaque is laden with damaging acid-producing bacteria that eats away at the tooth enamel. Neglecting daily flossing allows plaque to harden into tartar, which can cause both cavities and decay in a short amount of time. Flossing removes plaque and tiny food particles from between the teeth and right at the gum line where your toothbrush cannot reach. Brushing cleans the surfaces of the teeth and keeps your breath fresh.

Rinse Your Mouth. Whether you use mouthwash or just a swig of water, it is important to rinse your mouth out after you eat and drink anything other than water. This quick rinse helps to loosen food particles that have become trapped between the teeth, and it also helps to rinse away sugars coating the teeth.

Visit the Dentist on a Regular Basis. Visiting the dentist twice a year should be a priority. Your dentist is your greatest advocate in protecting your teeth and promoting optimal oral health. Visiting the dentist regularly can help avert problems or identify them early on for timely intervention.

Ask for Dental Sealants. Dental sealants are one of the easiest and most effective ways to prevent cavities in the back teeth. Dental sealants are as effective for adults as they are for children and adolescents.

Maintain a Healthy Diet. Making healthy dietary choices on a regular basis not only promotes better general health, but it also promotes good oral health. Avoid regular consumption of sugary foods and beverages, acidic foods and beverages, and over consumption of alcohol.

At Clearwater Dentistry, we want to help you achieve and maintain optimal oral health. With proper care and cavity prevention, your teeth can last a lifetime.
